Remember that the first draft of your dissertation is due in to me on Monday 23rd October 2017.
Here is an example dissertation from a couple of years ago, which received full marks.
You can also refer to the Understanding Standards website and previous handouts for guidance.
Any emergency questions or queries, just respond to one of the posts on this blog and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can.
I was wondering, are there any other ways of finding more critical reading texts for my dissertation other than just googling for it? I remember you saying something about a website you need a special pass for but I’m not sure if that is what it is for

Hi Ben, you should make sure you use Google Scholar as your search engine, rather than plain old Google – it will take you to academic articles on your chosen texts. Try using your texts and a key word from your topic/focus as a start for searching. If you find that you cannot access the article without paying, I have a login for Shibboleth via the University of Edinburgh that should grant you access, which I will need to send privately. If you email my school account, I can reply with the details of the login.

Hi Miss, I’m struggling to find many dissertation examples in which the candidate has done poetry. I’d like to read over them to cross reference mine. Do you have any examples saved or know where I could look?

Hi Karl, there are a couple on the Understanding Standards website – one on Plath and one on TS Eliot. They would be a helpful guide, and you can read over the marker’s commentary to see where they’ve done well, or not.

Hi Miss, did you say that it is acceptable to be 10% over the word limit for the dissertation?

Hi Ben,
Yes, you have 3000 words plus 10%.

Can that exclude footnotes?

Hey Miss, I’m really struggling to find critical reading on “A History of Insects” by Yvonne Roberts as it’s really not a well know book. Do you have any suggestions?

Hi Erin, I would perhaps look at reviews of the book from high quality newspapers, or, failing that, use general criticism on the topic of your dissertation to support points you make about the novel.
